During one of the various Ottoman-Spanish wars, the King of Spain decides to teach the Sultan not to tussle with an empire on which the sun never sets. He dispatches a fleet which sails round Africa and up the Red Sea. It makes a surprise landing in the Hejaz, sacks Mecca and Medina, destroys as much as it can, and then sails away before a proper counter-attack can be organised.

How does the Muslim world as a whole react to this? Would we see the Islamic states all lining up to fight the Spanish, and avenge this insult to their religion? Would we see a sense of despondency at this clear sign that God is against them? Or would people just lament the sack but do nothing about it?
