WI:Christian Brunei

What if Magellan meets the Sultan of Brunei and converts him to Christianity will they retain their empire and can they marry into the spanish nobility and even become spanish infantes..

I´m not saying Brunei converting is impossible, but I think it needs hell of a lot more than just Magellan;)

Aren´t there any later missions. Jesuits or anything?

The biggest problems is that there is too little Christian contact for a long term conversion to be plausible. There is a lot more contact with Muslims countries, and a lot more benefit to remain Muslim. You don't gain any strong allies by converting because at most there may be a few ships trading every year. You also don't necessarily gain access to the benefits of a more advanced civilization which you would normally get by converting such as a literature culture, advanced technology, and acceptance into an international order. Those achievements were already won.

So while an individual Sultan might indulge on a whim or interest to become Christian, I think there would be much more pressure to convert back to Islam for future generations. Stranger things have happened, but the odds are against it.

What blackfox says is true, there's nothing to gain from it.
I suppose its feasable a king of Brunei might genuinely become interested in christianity and convert purely for the sake of his soul, perhaps he can also then pass that onto his kids and then their kids.
But how much of this would trickle down to the general population? Not too much I'd wager.
And how long would they last in the face of muslim kingdoms?- nothing better than a different faith for a easy cassus beli...
All this is amplified in difficulty and potential to cause serious shit with it being Islam he would be converting from.

Seems pretty unlikely to me. I don't think Magellan was such a good preacher. Or mad enough to try.

You'd have to have a much earlier PoD.

If, say, Thomasite Christians send missions to the East Indies, or maybe Orthodox guys from a stronger Byzantium. ;)
