Nah, that role made him into a perfect Bruce Wayne, at least on the shallow rich playboy side of things. If you watch Christian Bale in American Psycho as Patrick Bateman he seems perfect for the psychopathic, intelligent, cunning, and mass murdering villain that the joker was.
So what if he was cast as the joker in the Dark Knight?

Agreed. I have a TL in which TDK doesn't make it into production thanks to both Bale and Ledger (who does survive...).The Dark Knight would get a little less attention if the actor playing the Joker does not die shortly before the movie is out. Probably does wonders to his Meme in the internet though.
i honestly think it depends on who plays batman.
Christian Bale of course.

but I don't think the movie would be as good, Bale is to big to be the joker in my opinion; and doesnt have the punk rock look that ledger played in the movie.
To be honest I didn't think Heath Ledger was a good choice when I heard he was picked to play the Joker. I just thought he was a dull actor and I couldn't imagine him pulling it off.
I was wrong about that but the 'punk rock look' was just the make-up dept. ANYONE with the right make-up can look like the joker. I'm sure Bale could too.
The question is whether Bale could pull off the light comedic touches that Ledger's portrayal had. Mostly Bale plays restrained crazy and then crazy but light touches are thin on the ground. I think he lacks the range.
As a Batman Bale is MUCH better than those of the 90's but the credit should really go to Chris Nolan. I think it was the look and the style of the films rather than Bale's portrayals. In fact Bale was the weakest screen presence (apart from Maggie Gyllenhall) in the Dark Knight.
