WI: Charles of Anjou and The Anjous unite Italy

While pondering how could Italy have united in the Middle Ages, I thought that maybe Odoacer could have secured the throne and established a feudal kingdom or the Pope could have expanded and then, it dawned on me. Could Charles of Anjou have changed his ambitions from Constantinople to Rome? What could have pushed him to change focus?

Difficult since the Pope was against Italy (the north) and Sicily (the south) uniting and blocking his temporal powers over the middle.
That's why the Hohenstaufens were opposed leading to Charles being invited in in the first place.
