WI Charles II of Spain dies young?

The biggest legacy of Charles II of Spain, apart from being the culmination of the Habsburg incestuous comedy (yeah, I actually have a version of the Aristocrats joke which involves said family), is that he lived for far longer than expected, and his choice of heir was to spark the War of Spanish Succession.

Now suppose he, sick as he was throughout his life, dies as a child or a teenager. What could happen?

If Charles II dies before age 8 or so, I think Don Juan of Austria (the younger) will become the leading figure in the Spanish government, as there is no way that Queen Mariana holds onto power without the pretext of being regent for her infant son. However, I am not sure how power will be distributed in the long run, as I think it would be difficult for Don Juan to be crowned king as he is a bastard.

With an early death of Charles II, I think things could turn out more in favor of the French. The War of Devolution (1668) would simply become an earlier war of Spanish Succession, though France would probably settle on taking the Spanish Netherlands, rather than trying to advance Louis XIV's at that time remote claim to the Spanish Throne. Since I don't think Spain could perform much worse in the War of Devolution, I think they would escape with the loss of a few counties in the Netherlands, and Franche-Comte, but otherwise intact.

With succession settled by 1670 or so, Spain can spend the next thirty years reforming itself, not being the sick man of Europe, dependent on the Dutch and English for survival against the French.
