WI: Charles II isn't impotent

Now, OTL, Charles had no heir and so made Louis XVIs grandson Philip V heir to Spain, ending the a Spanish Hapsburgs and brining in the Bourbons. What would happen if he had a legitimate heir, for our purposes Charles III? Obviously the War of Spanish Succession would be avoided, but would Spain be able to keep its position in Northern Europe?

It gives for Habsburgs few decades more. They practised inbreeding very loyally so Spanish branch goes extinct anyway. So there is still Spanish Succession War later but pretty different.

As Lalli, pointed out the Spanish Habsburgs inbred themselves out of existence.

There are two options - have Balthasar Carlos (Charles II's older half-brother) survive and become King. In this case Charles II as we know him would never exist since Balthasar Carlos would Marianna of Austria (his first cousin) instead of Philip IV (her uncle). Odds are they would be able to produce at least a couple of children who can survive and possibly reproduce.
Balthasar Carlos from what we know of him was healthy and did not have the mental and physical problems Charles II had that would force the Spanish monarch to be at the mercy of others.

Or if you have Charles II have any child with either of his wives that would survive him, you may be able to butterfly away the War of the Spanish Succession. All you need is for the Spanish Habsburgs to be able to last long enough that either the Austrian branch (who will also die out in the male line with Charles VI) or the Bourbons (who get their claim via the Grand Dauphin's mother) are of contention. But in that case the Powers may still try to divy up the Spanish Empire without Spanish consent in the manner they did when Joseph Ferdinand of Bavaria was Charles II's heir.

Or alternatively the Austrian branch does....

or the Spanish branch goes only in the male line.. and becomes Hapsburg - something.

The other possibility is have some stableboy do a bit of "national duty" and then claim the child as Charles'. Poor old Charles would probably regard it as a gift from God.
