WI: Charles II flees to the American colonies

I saw a lovely map by Martin23230 and it go me thinking, is there a scenario where Charles II could flee to the colonies but also reclaim the English throne at a later date? What POD would be required to make Charles think spending the interregnum in the New World is a good idea?

The question is, where? About his only choice would be Maryland, where Catholics and their allies / ilk weren't frowned upon. It's a bit difficult to imaging European royalty, accustomed to a certain standard of living, setting up a rudimentary court camping out in the then-wilderness of what would later become St. Marys County, Maryland, and dealing with sub-sub-tropical summers on the Chesapeake, near the mouth of the Potomac.

Indeed, comfort seems to be the problem. It easiest way to get Charles II to the colonies is to make him fear for his life in Europe, but that seems unlikely as long as France is his patron. Perhaps a few close scrapes with assassins makes him think Maryland is a better place to wait out his exile? Maryland is also the only place where he can be be around a good number of his would be subjects without risking his head.
