WI: Charles Gordon survives Khartoum

Charles Gordon was killed at Khartoum in 1885. The city was under siege by the Mahdi's forces until it eventually fell.
He could've nearly survived the siege if the British relief force arrived earlier if they hadn't taken too much time preparing.

What happens if the relief force arrived early and saved Gordon and Khartoum?

If relief force arrived earlier Mahdists would simply storm the city earlier. They knew that relief force is close.
Best chance for Gordon would be to evacuate from Khartum betore Nile route was closed. Problem is he really wanted to be a martyr.

He then would have been around to be one of the British Generals in the Boer War. What
kind of a difference- if any- that would have
made in said war I just can’t say, since I
have to admit I just don’t know enough
about Gordon to be able to say how good a
general he was.
