In late May 987 King Louis V of France the last Carolingian King died mysteriously without heirs... Right after his death his uncle Charles Duke of Lower Lorraine advanced as his heir (being the closest blood relative to the deceased King)
But in OTL Archbishop of Rheims Adalberon and Gerbert d' Aurillac Abbot of Bobbio (future Pope Sylvester II) supported Hughes Capet for the throne (he had noble blood and he had proved himself as an effective ruler)... In 2 months after Louis V death Hughes Capet was elected King and was crowned by Adalberon in Rheims...
WI Charles was elected King instead as Charles IV? How is that election altering French and European History? Any thoughts??
