WI Charles Duke of Lower Lorraine gets the French Crown in 987?

In late May 987 King Louis V of France the last Carolingian King died mysteriously without heirs... Right after his death his uncle Charles Duke of Lower Lorraine advanced as his heir (being the closest blood relative to the deceased King)
But in OTL Archbishop of Rheims Adalberon and Gerbert d' Aurillac Abbot of Bobbio (future Pope Sylvester II) supported Hughes Capet for the throne (he had noble blood and he had proved himself as an effective ruler)... In 2 months after Louis V death Hughes Capet was elected King and was crowned by Adalberon in Rheims...
WI Charles was elected King instead as Charles IV? How is that election altering French and European History? Any thoughts??

I guess it could go two ways - either it simply postpones the demise of the Carolingians for one generation, and the Capetians get a different surname from Robert (IIRC)'s nickname.

Or...?

It could also have knock-on effects for Portugal, whose royal family became an offshoot of the Capetians, though I can't remember how ! Something to do with a crusade perhaps...

If i am not mistaken (feel free to correct me) Portuguese Royal family evolved from the Dukes of Burgundy... If Charles gets the French Crown maybe there would be a Castillian Royal family in Portugal or Portugal is united with Castille...

I think in this period the dukes of Burgundy were created out of a cadet Capetian line

IIRC Castile evolved out of Leon which evolved out of Asturias. I really can't get the dates correct in my mind, though !

I think that Lisbon was what was liberated by Crusaders enroute to Palestine, but that a nascent Portuguese kingdom under the Burgundian line had been established in the North before this

Not sure if this relevant tho !

The Portuguese kings were descendents of a lesser branch of the Dukes of Burgundy. Probably Portugal would remain just another part of Leon, culturally linked to Galicia.

If Capetians are eliminated so are the Dukes of Burgundy... Since the Duke of Burgundy was an uncle to Philippe I of France... This butterflies away Portugal as an independent country and makes them part of Leon or Galicia...
