WI Charles de Gaulle dies while fleeing France in 1968?

During 1968, massive protests and strikes threw France into chaos. On May 29, Charles de Gaulle fled France by helicopter and arrived at a French military base in Germany. De Gaulle had lost confidence in himself, but General Jacques Massu persuaded Charles de Gaulle to return to France. After returning to France, he was able to stabilize the situation and the protests ended.

However, what if the helicopter crashed and Charles de Gaulle died while fleeing to Germany? What would happen to France and how would this impact the world?

In my opinion the most predictable and immediate consequences will not provoke a civil war in France. De Gaulle was a hero and his popularity, even in May 1968, was real in the country. His death in such circumstances would condemn the protest movement very quickly.
We can be sure that:
-Gaston Monnerville becomes Acting President.
-The army intervenes to crush the riots, with or without the presidential approval (and General Massu probably leads a de facto military regime until the return of civil peace)
-The French people will be furious, the rioters and the political forces that support them will be discredited for a long time.
(All my apologies for my very ugly english ^^)

Even with the problems in Franco-American relations in the Sixties, especially the issues of NATO and Vietnam, De Gaulle still had a very respectable reputation in America due to his status as a "legendary war hero/statesman".

Will De Gaulle being replaced by another leader avoid those problems with foreign relations?

Well, it depends. Those problems are not a bug of Gaullism, but a feature and consecuence. If you want better relations between France and the US/NATO in that era, you will need to change the Gaullist foreign policy for something different, not only the leader.
