WI: Charlemagne marries Anthousa, daughter of Constantine V

The idea of Charlemagne marrying Irene pops up now and again. But what of this idea, aka: one of the opening moves for CK2 players.

Anthousa was one of the children of Constantine V by his 3rd wife. And she would go on to be a saint. But what if the Byzantine Emperor (either her father or brother) negotistes a political marriage with the rising Frankish ruler to the west?

Would Charlemagne be able to claim the Byzantine throne for himself & his heirs.

Almost certainly not, but it would make relations with the Empire smoother (so long as the Isaurians are in power). That said, I could see some descendent at least making a go at it.

Real life is not a CK2 game.

On that note, any shred of imperial legitimacy granted by the Basileia unto the Franks is another future weapon to wield against the medieval Papacy.
