WI: Ceasar steps down

Pretty much goes against his entire character, though he did do it before. But, lets say that, rather than being voted Dictator in perpetuity, Caesar steps down from the Dictatorship, to take a proconsular governorship out east to go fight Parthia, Dacia, and anyone else that looks at Rome funny.

What then?

He said Sulla had actes stupidly when he stepped down. So Caesar will do nothing more than veiling his power like Augustus.

Just another title given back without the power attached, Caesar still holds a lot of informal power and much of it simply comes from his affluence, people would listen to what Caesar had to say even in retirement and I doubt he'd retire from politics entirely. To be honest I doubt he'd give up his legions, sans dictatorship Caesar would have to operate with a level of subtlety that may just save his life if he adapts.

Given that, as long as he survives March 44 BC, he wanted to campaign anyway, would we see much difference between a scenario in which he holds power while on campaign and one in which he relinquishes it?

Caesar died not because he wasnt subtle but because he was almost never in Rome. Augustus built up a relationship with the senate, consolidated power, kept in touch with the goings ons of the city and was well entrenched with it. Remember, he spent almost all of the 14 years between 44-30 BCE in Italy. Caesar on the other hand was never in Rome.

He's still largely the big man in Rome so even with out all the formal and fancy titles he's still in charge, though more indirectly. He'll go off and fight that Parthia campaigned he had begun to start setting up, though always to make sure he is kept up to date on what's going on back in Rome.

Also depends on the allies and cronies he leaves in charge of the government while he "officially" steps down from power.

Caesar also foresaw another civil war if he was no longer in power. And he was right.

Sly, I think that in the end, the only decisive factors in Augustus'power were the facts that he held 90% of the legions and that everybody knew that he was ready to crush any opposition in blood.

Caesar can step down from the dictatorship and retain less formal supreme power.

He did not die because he was not soon enough in Italy. Not did Augustus live long because he stayed most of his time in Italy in the years 44-30.

Caesar died for just one reason : he dismissed his spanish guard and dis aînée threatening while Augustus retained his praetorian guard and had conspirators executed.
