WI: Carthage wins one fo the Punic Wars

So I was thinking about Early Rome and what they went through, (I was playing Rome Total War II), and I wondered if during one of the Punic wars that Carthage had won of them. What would be the implications of this. I figured that if they one the first one, maybe they would take over all of Sicily and possible a push into Southern Italy. As for the Second and third one, I have no idea.

If Carthage is able to pull a victory in the first one (which really nearly happened anyway), its likely that Carthage would take full control over Sicily. I'm unsure if they would outright annex the eastern Greek city states, but would certainly put governors over them that worked for Carthagian interests (this had long been a goal of Carthage and one of their attempts actually caused them to ally with Rome at one point in the past). I would also suspect that the Roman alliance system would be dissolved, and a league of city states in southern Italy would be set up to counter Rome's influence in the region. Finally, I think its pretty likely that Carthage would force Rome to burn their navy and forbid them from establishing one ever again. This would leave all of Italy open to Carthagian raids and attacks should Rome try to reestablish itself.

I highly doubt that Carthage would attempt to annex any land in Italy proper; it would be too costly, have very little benefit, and goes against the precedent of previous Carthegian military victories.

I wish there was more Carthage wins First Punic Wars TL's. OTOH there are too many Carthage wins Second Punic War TL's, most of which underestimate Hannibal's problems.

Rome would never in a million years accept such a treaty. And Carthage would take any treaty really. The problem is by the time you get to a point where Rome is willing to deal (say a Carthaginian victory at Aegetes), Carthage is also exhaused. So any peace treaty is going to look more like Sicily divided into 3; Northeast controlled by Rome, southeast by Syracuse and west by Carthage. I supposed you could do something where Carthage consistently manages to prevent Rome from even landing in Sicily until Rome says fuck it, but then that's no fun.

The main exception being Monopolist's excellent TL.

Unfortunately, Republican Rome saw war differently from virtually all of her neighbours. Carthage (and the others) tended to fight for limited aims and then negotiate a treaty once those aims were either achieved or they had obviously failed.

Rome would fight as long as she herself still stood. The war ended when the enemy surrendered or Rome was destroyed.
