WI: Carter assassinated in 1979

Let's say Raymond Lee Harvey's plot to assassinate Jimmy Carter on May 5, 1979 was successful. Walter Mondale would become President, would he beat Reagan in 1980, and then probably win reelection in 1984? What would be the effects of a successful Carter assassination, both in short-term and long-term, economically and politically?

Now the Democrats face a dilemma that Republicans faced in 1976, when Reagan challenged Ford. Will Ted Kennedy still make his challenge for the nomination against Mondale?

I don't know.

No. Carter and Kennedy were two different political stripes. Kennedy would either have convinced Mondale not to run (highly unlikely) or would not have made the run.
