WI Cardinal Pacelli dies in 1939 just before his election to the Papapcy?

Hmm.. A montreal jewish convert becomes pope - St.Urbain, anyone?
A Winnipegger/métis becomes pope - St. Boniface?]

Pope Urban IX sounds nice...
Boniface X i dont know... it fell out of use during medieval times and it is associated with some nasty guys (like Boniface VII) who were a disgrace to the Holy See...

Oops. "St. Urbain" is the heart of the Jewish g/h/e/t/t/o neighbourhood in Montreal, made famous by "St. Urbain's Horseman" by Mordechai Richler, a famous Canadian writer. That was a Canadian in-joke, not a real suggestion.

St. Boniface is a neighbourhood in Winnipeg, and the saint was prominent among the Métis and the French in western Canada. I don't believe that he was particularly venerated in Québec, where any hypothetical Canadian Pope would come from. So, not exactly a joke, but not serious either.

An "allied" Antipapacy is a possibility... but i highly doubt it... College of Cardinals would prefer to leave Papacy vacant for the time being rather than traumatising (possibly severely) the Church... Perhaps the governance of Church would remain on the hands of the College of Cardinals (as it is stipulated on Canon Law when Pope dies) for sometime until the situation clears... Or they could imitate Eastern Orthodoxs and elect a "locum tenens" aka a temporary administrator for the Holy See until the serious troubles have passed and a normal conclave can take place...

True...that would be the likely course if the Cardinals were left to their own devices. However, isn't it possible that Mussolini (possibly under influence from Hitler) would try to pressure the College into calling a conclave and electing a pope who won't object to Axis actions?

If Mussolini and Hitler continued pressing the College of Cardinals (in whose hands the governance of Church would have passed if Pope died in 1941) i am sure that would have passed an emergency Act of College (Acts of College of Cardinals are valid during Sede Vacante but they are invalid after a new Pope is elected unless the new Pope confirms them) to elect a "locum tenens" to the Papacy (to keep Mussolini and Hitler happy) while actual powers would remain to hands of the Sacred College... Russians did that when Bolshevics had imprisoned almost all eligible Bishops in order to secure stability in Church...
