WI: Canadian Doctor Who

The first 3 series of the new Doctor Who were produced with the participation of the CBC. As far as I know, this only extended to putting some money in and not any actual involvement into the production of the show.

But what if, for wheter reasons, the CBC put up a bit more money but with some strings attached ? The government has an habit of wanting "canadian content" so this could mean some canadian characters or having a set numbers of episodes in each series taking place in canada (I seem to recall highlander:the series which was a co-production doing just that back in the 90s).

In term of characters, having a a canadian officer in charge of UNIT would make the organisation a bit more multinational (it IS part of the UN after all) and at the other end of the spectrum, an actor with some fame on both side of the ocean could have been chosen for The Doctor (christopher plummer comes to mind though the new series seem to go for younger doctors).

Any thoughts ?

Doctor Eh? :p
(don't kill me, I couldn't resist....)

(Though I'm really holding out for the poutine loving Docteur Qui on Télé-Québec.....:D)

Docteur Qui? Sounds catchy, I like it.

Hmm... Since the big event that is relevant to Canadians, Americans and everybody else is the ARW, I can see one episode there.

And if it was Canadian history, it would die.

EXTERIOR - DAYLIGHT - PASTURE

A tranquil scene as a red-headed girl of about thirteen years age sits against a tall tree, watching a flock of sheep graze on knee-high grass. Suddenly, there is a strange, repetitive noise, like a photocopier struggling to churn out paper.

ANNE OF GREEN GABLES
Oh my! Whatever is that peculiar noise?

She stands, and a moment later, a York Boat materializes in the pasture, startling the sheep.

ANNE OF GREEN GABLES
What on Earth?

A tall man, wearing a red parka, rainbow-colored scarf, and beaver-skin hat leaps out of the boat and approaches ANNE OF GREEN GABLES.

DOCTOR EH
Good day, eh?

Well, Sydney Newman, creator of Doctor Who was from Canada (and even headed the NFB). The made-for-tv Movie was filmed in Vancouver. There are lots of Canadian Whovians. I'm sure there could have been some episodes filmed in Canada. (I think it might have been cool- and the CBC didn't know what it was losing...)
The CBC did contribute an online Documentary ("Planet of the Doctor") and add a few Canada-only bits filmed to fill in commercial breaks, but not much else besides money.

Lothaire Bluteau having a part, anyone?

Canadian commander of UNIT would be very easily done. Canadian side kicks equally easily done. Canadian Doctor might be a stretch, unless it was Mike Myers.

Mike Myers in place of Sylvester McCoy maybe. Myers can play straight, or at least straight enough to be the doctor but it would have to be early ish in his career.

probably as a bad guy. Even in his early days, he mostly played guys who were a bit deranged. I'm actualy having difficulty imagining him play a sane, happy go-lucky character.

Mainly because he's been typecast. However, he did do Daniel Coulombe in Jésus de Montréal, and that's the angle I was thinking of if Lothaire played a good guy role, and then some.

you don't think his character in Jésus de Montréal was deranged ? we might have different standard.
