WI: Canadian Alaska

I can imagine that if the Britished purchased it around the time the Ameircans did IOTL I can see a bit of anger on the part of Americans, in that the Alabama claims still hadn't been settled, for which the Americans wanted bits of Canada. After gold is discovered unlikely the the British would give it up, even with all the republican prospectors from around the United States and British Empire. Here is a ridiculous idea. How about they payed the US with Rupert's Land, then the Northwest Territories, Alaska, British Columbia, and the Arctic Islands became West Canada?

EDIT: Here we go. http://rubberduck3y6.deviantart.com/art/US-Buys-Rupert-s-Land-121539743

(a) Why would the US be angry? As far as anyone knew at the time, Alaska was just a barren, frozen wasteland. The US purchase was slated quite a bit IOTL as a waste of money, so there's very little chance of public opinion coming out strongly against the British purchase.

(b) Why would Britain "pay" the US with any territory at all? They had a perfect right to buy land from Russia, it's not like the US was going to start a war over it, and even if they did, they'd most probably lose. The British have literally no motivation to cede land at this juncture in history.
