WI Canada in OPEC?

I've already wondered why a country whose reserves are second only to Saudi Arabia's has never joined. Leaving aside PET's economic chauvinism, have Canada join with a 1968 POD (to prevent PET in 24 Sussex).

The only possible PODs that I could see from this are either "Mike" (aka Lester B. Pearson) doing it, which is a bit out-of-character for him, or Stanfield winning the election (which is possible).

If not Stanfield, perhaps Winters beats Trudeau and wins the election. Though unilingual, he's far more experienced than Trudeau and a not-so-closeted Blue Tory within the Liberal Party. Even better because he served as Pearson's Minister of Trade and Commerce and was in the running to replace Walter Gordon in Finance.

I can't find my sources but I seem to recall that part of the reason we did not join was pressure from the US. I don't see that changing regardless of PM.

Maybe if Canada is a founding member of an OPEC-like organization (we only started pumping the Oil Sands ~7 years after it started) we would be in it. But I don't see it coming about in a way after there is a cartel up and running and we want to have a trade agreement with the Americans.

Trudeau going along with the US? Which ATL are you from? :p I think mmmeee0 is correct, and that could mean an Arabist Canadian foreign policy. Which isn't as big a deal as it sounds.

Stanfield's a better bet - if you take Trudeau out of the equation, Stanfield would've been the Tories' most "popular" person out there in their party. Yeah, you'd have Winters running the show with the Liberals, but Stanfield could find a way of winning.

Why in the flying f**k would you want Canada to be in the OPEC club?? For one thing, back in the early 70s Canada's petroleum output would have given it about the same clout as Ecuador... HELLO Mister True Blue Tory hisself... As someone who grew up a full-blooded sovereigntist, you disappoint me, Sir! :p
