WI: Canada goes Republican in 1838

Hypothetically, what would have happened had the Patriotes been successful in their efforts to gain independence from the Crown? What would a republican Upper and Lower Canada look like? Would relations between Anglo and Francophones be better? Could an independent Canada be able to stand on its own economically without the aid of Britain? What would the relationship with the US be like? And what happens to Western Canada?

In all honesty, a successful rebellion in the Canadas in the 1830s is approaching ASB. The rebellion in Upper Canada in particular had no real popular support, and its defeat was inevitable. The 'best case scenario' for the Patriotes would be to secure Lower Canada for a period, but even there the Patriotes would have encountered sustained opposition from the English minority and the Catholic elite, and suppression of the rebellion via reinforcements from Britain would have been the likeliest outcome (a Britain confronting Chartism is hardly going to allow a Chartist-like movement in Lower Canada to serve as inspiration for domestic Chartists).

Ya. Itd be a massive own-goal. If the Patriotes successfully overthrew the government (ha! As if!), the Brits would land on them like ton of bricks and probably try to remove rights.

Considering that Canada is right next door to a much larger (population-wise) and quite belligerent country that was in the habit of invading them every few decades, there is NO WAY that they would have thrown off the protection of the British military at that time.
