Flavius Julius Crispus was born around 299 AD and was Emperor's Constantine I first born son by his mistress Minervina...
He was a brilliant military Commander and in 317 he was proclaimed Caesar and Commander of all Gallic Legions... In 318, 320 and 323 he lead victorious campaigns against the Franks and the Allemani... In 324 he defeated Licinius's fleet in the Hellespontus and later that year he delivered the final blow to Licinius in the battle of Chrysopolis...
But in 326 Empress Fausta who was afraid that Crispus would have inherited the whole Empire and put aside her own sons she accused him that he tried to rape her... Constantine I ordered his immediate execution... Few months later when Fausta's plot was revealed she was drowned in her bath under Constantine's orders...
WI Crispus survived the accusations or was never accused? Could he had inherited the whole Empire or Constantine would have organised a new Tetrarchy splitting the Empire amongst his 4 sons? Any thoughts?
