What if Columbus didn't sail? First of all, would it still mean in all likelihood that someone else, like Cabot, sailed first instead -- by, say, 1500? Second, does this mean, in all likelihood, that the first landing in America will be in the northeast (Newfoundland, etc)?
And finally, if yes to both, what happens next? How does exploration and colonization (assuming it happens) come about differently by starting in the north?
