WI: Cabot, not Columbus

This was somewhat covered in this thread, but:

What if Columbus didn't sail? First of all, would it still mean in all likelihood that someone else, like Cabot, sailed first instead -- by, say, 1500? Second, does this mean, in all likelihood, that the first landing in America will be in the northeast (Newfoundland, etc)?

And finally, if yes to both, what happens next? How does exploration and colonization (assuming it happens) come about differently by starting in the north?

Giovanni Caboto instead of Cristoforo Colombo?

Being a (non native) venetian colud potentially change a lot of things, including the sponsorship of the first voyage, as historically happened...

If Caboto discovers the New World sponsored by Spain may be Colombo will catch the eye of Henry the VIIth instead...

Actually, I was thinking of writing a timeline where Columbus attempts to become Doge of Genoa (and succeds, even though he is not part of the major families of Genoa) and Cabot "discovers" the New World instead of Columbus.

So hey, you're not the only one thinking of this.
