In 917 a huge Byzantine army under the command of Leo Phokas fought the Bulgarian army of Simeon I. During the battle the Byzantines pushed back the Bulgarian infantry, who broke and nearly routed before Simeon's timely intervention, which resulted in mass confusion and a complete route of the Byzantine army. The battle was one of the largest and bloodiest of its era.

Say the Bulgarians fail to prevent their infantry from collapsing and the Byzantines inflict a decisive defeat on Simeon, how would this affect the next few decades? Presumably Bulgaria wouldn't be able to establish dominance over the southern Balkans like it did IOTL, and the Byzantine Empire looks to be in a much better position, at least on paper.
