WI Byzantine emperor John Tsmiskes did not die

So we all know that Tzmiches destroyed the Rus took Bulgaria captured most of Anatolia took much of the holy land only to die of a bad sickness. My question is if he did not fall sick how would Byzantine history have changed.

Immortal Byzantine Emperors belong in ASB.

Seriously, he would go to conquer Palestine. Maybe.

I don't know, he had a tough time taking Jerusalem the first time. And while Immortal Byz Emperors belong in ASB, who's to say he wont get killed on the battlefield that decade later

I have the distinct impression that if he lives another decade or decade and a half that he will come into conflict with Basil.

The rightful Emperor, not Basil the Chamberlain (who he will probably do something not too dissimilar to what Basil II did OTL).

Basil is either almost or already of age as of John's OTL death.

He might not appreciate sharing power with the little Armenian.

That is true well do you think a civil war could break out. I doubt it after all in a decade John would be in his 60s I am sure he will die but my quesion his how far will hi s conquests go if he lives

I was funning with you. You mentioned him not dying. :p

Fixed. :p

...damn, now I want to write a Highlander fanfic where John is an Immortal in that sense.

I do think a civil war is a definite possibility. Again: Basil is already 18 or within a few months of that. John is going to have to find some way to deal with that, as his only truly legitimate claim to the emperorship is by marriage - and Basil was born into the purple.

How he resolves that is going to determine if he's going to be making anything except an example of what happens to those who cross Basil.

Hard to say really. At the time of his death the Byzantines were pretty much vanquishing everything before them and John was an extremely talented emperor and general. So Syria and Jerusalem along with the rest of Bulgaria wasnt out of the question.

I like what Treadgold says about Tzimisces. "Byzantium still had fine generals and vast resources, but a John Tzimisces was practically irreplacable".

I see your Highlander and raise you Vampire the Masquerade. One of my friends is really into it, and I discovered she's part of the "Tzimisce clan." Apparently they thought his name sounded cool, and borrowed it. This lead t my own idea of John becoming an immortal Orthodox vampire slayer.

I don't recall when exactly it happened, but it struck me the other day - what you just mentioned, that is.

That was really weird. Still is really weird.

And I acknowledge the superiority of your idea of John as a vampire slayer.

Back on topic: I haven't really read Treadgold, so I'm hesitant to make any argument about what he said, but did the ERE really need a general (and emperor) of his quality?

Need as in...would it suffer anything that would impair its future by his absence?
