WI: Bush's war for Taiwan

http://archives.cnn.com/2001/ALLPOLITICS/04/24/bush.taiwan.abc/

What if 911 did not happen and Bush made his main external focus a defense of Taiwan? What if it evolved into a war?
The results would be catastrophical, and would fit into a "most chaotic 2000s possible" thread, right?

That's.... pretty much standard US policy in regards to Taiwan.

ETA::: OK, re-reading, about the only thing different is that Bush didn't try to cloak his langauge a bit more in saying just what they would do should China attack Taiwan.

But the big deal here is Bush shooting off his mouth without thinking, not an actual What Would Happen policy change.

Borderline ASB. Chen Shui-Brian talked about independence when he was in power with his mouth instead of real action. The only recent POD that could truly turn hot would be the 3rd Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1996 before the presidential election. It won't happen under Bush II.
