WI Bush was Carter's CIA Director

Historically George HW Bush offered to continue his post as Director of Central Intelligence for Jimmy Carter after the 1976 election. The two had built a working rapport during the election due to Bush personally providing intelligence briefings for Carter and Bush's tenure as DCI was very popular with the agency. Carter ended up declining Bush otl, but what if he accepted the offer and kept Bush as DCI for his term?

Most notably Reagan is going to need a different VP. Bush won't even be running in 1980, its bad optics to campaign against your boss. Observers believed the DCI position would be the end of Bush's political career, which seems likely.

Would Bush cause any changes on the events of the Carter presidency, particularly Iran? It would be amusing if he also continued on as DCI for whoever comes after Carter but that seems unlikely unless Iran is averted.

Perhaps, then again Bush could run for Texas Governor in 1982 if he wants to give politics one last shot. His sons would still go into elected office. The biggest change here is in Reagan's VP. If Bush hadn't been available, then Reagan would've picked Rumsfeld.
