WI: Bush/Trump '88?

Jon Meacham wrote in his biography about Bush 41 that Donald Trump was seeking to be Bush's running mate in 1988. Trump however said that Lee Atwater approached him about the idea, but nothing came of it. So, my question is how would Trump being chosen over Dan Quayle impact the race in 1988, and how would it impact Bush's presidency? How would it affect the 1992 election? Would Trump be a better VP than Quayle?

Trump will be a lot worse than Quayle; he's inexperienced, boisterous, and has tunnel vision. Any charm he brings would quickly wear off, with numerous gaffes plauging his Veep-hood (I don't know what the technical term is) and embarrassing the administration. My prediction is he has an affair with a staffer, or lashes out against an aide in anger, and is booted of the reelection ticket.

Now this is not to mention how a man with no political experience would handle Vice Presidental duties, escpecially one who has a big stick mentality when it comes to problems.

What of after the death of Howard Malcolm "Mac" Baldrige, Jr., Ronald Reagan appoints Donald Trump on July 25, 1987 as his new*United States Secretary of Commerce?

Giving him experience in a political office and in cabinet meetings, having the same connections as President Hoover.

In that scenario, Trump would already be controversial. Bush would not date choose him as a running mate.
