In 2000 George W. Bush defeated Al Gore by an extremely small margin of 537 votes in the state of Florida, putting him over the top with 271 electoral votes. Because of this, and also because Gore had won the popular vote, many felt that Bush had stolen the election. But what if Gore had won? What if he had earned the support of a few hundred Cuban exiles in Florida and won the state of Florida, giving him much more than the 270 necessary electoral points to become President? What would his presidency have looked like? Would he have continued increasing our budget surplus? Would our present debt woes be avoided? Would he have tried to implement national healthcare? How would he have handled 9/11 and the War on Terror, or even better could he have paid more attention and foiled the plot? Who would run against him in 2004, and could Gore win re-election (either with 9/11 or without 9/11) and could his economic policies have dampened the effects of the Great Recession?
