WI:Brunei intervenes in the 7 years war

To expel the Spanish from South East Asia and get their empire back.
Their empire has been gone for around 200 years by that point; I suspect it might not be fresh in anyone's minds. Also, how realistic of a goal is that? I'm dubious of Brunei's military capacity to actually push Spain out of the Philippines.

Yeah, I don't think they win but that does not mean that they can't try and make war with Spain?

They were waiting till Spain is distracted but stopped pursuing their claims once they gave Palawan to Spain.

Pretty much. Who has the resurgent colonial empire, and who is barely more than a regional power (and that is generous)?

And even if they strike, would the British recognize them as equals or as merely co-belligerents, to have a separate peace with? And what if Brunei, assuming its leaders gain the magical insight to attack Spain in the first place, attack Manila when the British have held it?

Brunei gets annexed by a Spain who outclass them in every way and goes down in history as one of the stupidest ways to lose your independence ever?

No, after the war officially ended and nobody ( except the Spanish, obviously ) cares in Europe about them ...

Quite; even if Brunei manages to take territory while Spain is distracted, holding it once Spain isn't dealing with Britain any more is a completely different proposition.

I think popping up on Spain's radar is a bad idea. They could certainly come to settle the score after the 7 YW, unless some opponent went and offered Brunei "protectorate" instead.

Which is the other big possibility.

Of course, being ruled with a slightly softer touch from London is not exactly a winning scenario for Brunei either.
