"If on the other hand, Burgoyne had made a feint toward New England, he could have divided America forces and vastly increased the odds of overcoming a reduced force left at Bemis Heights. The Americans were fearful that Burgoyne's aim was to conquer New England, and a deceptive move eastward would have doubled their concern. If Burgoyne's strike on Bennington had been mounted with half of his army, he would have gained needed supplies and also thoroughly deceived the Americans as to his strategic purpose. This would have drawn off many if not most of the Americans on a wild goose chase. Burgoyne then could have quickly concentrated his army and moved on Bemis Heights."
