WI: British-Japanese Alliance during Second Sino-Japanese War

With British Hong Kong in need of protection and nationalist-irredentist China on north in mind, and the Japanese advancing on the early stage of the War, which were also a colonial imperialist power, will British-Japanese alliance reborn as in WWI? How would the War turn out?

Unless there is an attack by the Chinese the British would never be involved in such a stupid war of aggression that Japan started.
Japan and Britain could be in an alliance and could even be both at war with China but for that to happen a much earlier POD is required

If I remember correctly that was a defensive alliance. Had the Japanese attack China they could offer something to UK, but in no way UK was obliged to wiggle its little finger.
