Britain was a guarantor power in Cyprus during the Turkish invasion, and before Turkey's 1974 invasion, they refused a Turkish request to support it. According to Foreign Secretary and future Prime Minister James Callaghan, US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger "vetoed" at least one British military action to preempt the Turkish landing.
