Could the Boers of gotten Delagoa Bay before the British or the Portuguese? Lets say the British take over the Dutch African colonies either during the revolutionary war or shortly after. Setting in motion the Boer Treck one or two generation earlier. THen lets say they move east and take Delagoa Bay. Could they of stayed independent sorounded by the Portuguese to the north and British to the west?

No, I mean to say that the chance of South Africa to remain a crown colony is probably much bigger in this scenario. Maybe even keeping the name of Cape Colony ?

If they had had Delagoa Bay, I think it would have been very difficult to incorporate them into the British Empire. British policy was aimed in a fairly sustained way at keeping this from happening, and it was only the British occupation of Egypt that tied their hands to the point where they were unable to prevent the rail link. Once that happened, the balance of power shifted away from Cape Colony to the Transvaal.
