I've read Cliveless World yes and have looked at quite a few books on colonial Indian history lately. I admit, although the Cliveless word interests me, I am not so interested in one that's French India instead of British India as one simply where British/French/whoever's dominance in India is not established right away.
IOTL Clive tried to shoot himself but apparently mis-fired (so said the three books I read and Cliveless TL). Suppose he ended up killing himself; woo butterflies.
Are the British really done in India? Would another man not simply step up to the plate and take Clive's place; perhaps a little less effecient, maybe more imperial? I'm assuming Clive kills himself shortly after Madras is taken by the French during the First Carnatic War. He kills himself after the whole affairs over.
Now there's still a good chance Dupleix is going to end up being returned to France, even if he wins the Second Carnatic War (assuming it still happens). His company's in major financial difficulties and his gains aren't exactly high. Supposing he too ends up being deposed and neither Clive or Dupleix is in India- what's going to happen?
Butterflies definately, but in the short term- and long term, what does this spell for Indian colonization. Is it going to be left alone, largely to minor trading outposts, or will Britian and France end up fighting for dominance in their varying regions, establishing small kingdoms and fighting each other or..well. You tell me.
