I do know from some of colonial history in Asia that Commodore Perry opened up Japan to trade, thus causing the rise of Japan and, indirectly, making Commodore Perry responsible for Pearl Harbour, the Bombing of Darwin, and the existence of hentai among other things.

I'm thinking, what if some other power, say, either the British Empire, or maybe even the Belgians, get into the Joeson Dynasty and try to tech it up so as to act as a 'counter' to the efforts of Commodore Perry and the American activity in Japan. What would have happened? Could the Qing Dynasty decide it wants in on the Western industrialism game too?

Also, just to throw this in - if the Eureka Stockade led to something like an Australian revolution, if a power like Russia or one of the alternate Asian powers offered help (similar to France giving help to the Americans during the American War of Independence -sorry to remind any Yanks of that, but it did happen, but likely more of a selfish motive - or more selfish again, depending on your opinion), would the Eureka Rebellion forces (for want of a better name for the aforementioned hypothetical Australian secessionists) accept it?

I guess this makes this a two-parter. Oops.
