I dont feel the british pre 1930s understood just how strategically important oil would be, had they with potentially baku, persia, iraq, kuwait, uae, qatar, oman and potentially SA all falling within the british sphere, as well as dominating the shipping routes on the area with Suez, aden, cyprus etc todays britain and the world could be a very different place
Middle East was not an importamt source of oil in the 30s and the Brits spent a lot of effort securing oil from Persia.
