WI Britain pushed the claim in Northwest Greenland?

Hey Guys,

In some maps Britain places a claim over Northwest Greenland, however they never pressed the claim thus it was never a big issue, however what if for some reason Britain pushed the claim. Perhaps not militarily but certainly putting political pressure on the Danish government.

Would we see it ceded to the British Empire? If not would Anglo-Danish relations be worse IOTL, alongside Greenland-Canadian relations.

Seems rather a waste of their diplomatic efforts, TBH. Even the Inuit aren't all that interested in spending much time up there, IIRC.

Unless there's some resources up there of which I'm unaware?

Yep. Oil.

That's why Canada and Greenland iOTL are arguing over tiny Hans Island.

Is there actually a definitive source that says that the British actually claimed NW Greenland? I couldn't find anything to back up the maps, which could be put down to dodgy cartography.

I read in the BBC History magazine that the British did 'claim' that region but never forced the claim. Not a rock-solid source however they do know their stuff.

Good to know, thanks!

Q: when was it discovered OTL? Until that time it's still as worthless to Britain as the Libyan desert was to Italy in the 30s.
