WI: Bristow instead of Hayes in 1876

Since Bristow was famous for his prosecution of the Klan and support of civil rights, it is possible we won't see the removal of the last of the federal troops from the Deep South and allowing the Redeemers to retake control of those states. Of course this assumes that Bristow wins the election and since it was likely Hayes promise to end Reconstruction that likely won him the election it is possible we might see a Tilden Presidency instead.

I think we've discussed a Tilden victory before. The consensus was that it'd be very similar to Haye's, with both being reformers and Reconstruction ending. One difference would be Paraguay would suffer more in treaty negotiations for the War of the Triple Alliance. Hayes decided Paraguay would keep the territory between the Pilcomayo River and the Verde River. With Tilden or Bristow, that might not happen.

Another effect would be the end of Republican dominance a lot earlier. There would only be 16 years of nonstop Republican rule rather than 24.

The Stalwarts hated Bristow too much for me to see much chance of his being nominated. But if he was--well, I don't think any Republican candidate except the Ohioan Hayes could have defeated Tilden in Ohio (and even Hayes carried the state very narrowly), and without Ohio I don't see the Republican candidate winning.
