WI: Bleda wins over Atilla and leads the Huns

From what I remember, they had a leadership dispute and Bleda lost. I think Bleda favoured going after Persia and the Eastern part of the Roman Empire, from what I remember.

How much do we even know about Bleda?

He and Atilla seemed to rule jointly for a while, and invaded the Eastern Roman Empire, getting as far as Constantinople before turning back. Maybe with Bleda in charge, they'd have continued to hassle the east instead of Gaul.

So basically next to nothing?I'm not sure how we can even predict what he can do if we cannot accurate assess his abilities or personality.

Plus, Attila only turned west when he'd essentially milked the Eastern Empire for all it was worth. Any attempts to extort more from it would have simply run into the law of diminishing returns. Quite possibly Bleda, if he was successful enough to find himself in a similar position against the East, would turn his attention to the West just like Attila did.

But not necessarily the same way.

From Pannonia, the Huns could easily invade Italy. It wasn't necessary for them to overrun Germany clear to the Rhine, thus driving Visigoths and Franks into the Roman camp, and generally taking on more vassals than they could hold down. .

Obviously, the Nibelungs would be slain by King Bleda, instead of Etzle and it would he who, in turn, was killed by Kreimhild :)
