In 1926, a insane woman named Violet Gibson attempted to assassinate Benito Mussolini while the latter was walking among a crowd in the Piazza del Compidoglio in Rome after leaving an assembly of the International Congress of Surgeons.

Using a Modele 1892 reovlver disguised in a black shawl, she fired twice at Musolini, the first shot just missing his head and the gun misfirng on the second attempt. She was arrested on the spot after beign saved from a lynch mob by police. At the request of Mussolini, she was released and spent her last days at a mental asylum.

But what if Gibson successfully assassinated Mussolini? Who would succeed him as leader of Italy? Would Italy still invade Ethiopia or join the Axis in World War II?

Killing Benny at the time can start the quick fall of the PFI from power, not only at the time the party had just begun the process of transforming the italian state and nation in a fascist one (the OVRA, Gran Consiglio del Fascismo and the Tribunal for the defense of the state, still not existed at the time of the attack and neither the PFI was by law the only political party allowed in Italy).
Knowing how his hodge podge party was kept together only by him, the moment he die there will be a lot of political infighting between fascist group for nominate the heir and it will quickly devolve in phisical violence along all the nation...you must also add the remnant of the opposition join in; the most probable outcome will be a military dictatorship (probably lead by Diaz or Badoglio, but for pratical effect managed by the usual liberal leadership...with maybe some token socialist of the Turati group to throw a bone to the dog) with the king support and a return to a somewhat authoritarian democracy some year later.

Naa, without Benny Italy will not invade Ethiopia, it was his plan to show how his regime was better than the past liberal and because he thought military conquest was the way to demonstrate how strong was Italy.

I agree with this.

IMHO, the military will place their choice of ‘regent figure’ in power and look to Europe to flex their muscles instead of African adventurism. War with Yugoslavia and the occupation of Albania are distinct possibilities.

Does this mean World War II begins in the Balkans years before Hitler invades Poland?

Hard to say. It’s unlikely the authoritarian (military-royal? Right-wing populist?) regime will ‘annoy’ the WAllies like OTL Italy did, so a ‘break’ with the international order would be less likely. Then the nature of the conflict and Italy’s relations with the other major powers would make all the difference.
