Didn't want to bump up an old thread. But I saw something very interesting.
In 1780, Benedict Arnold confirmed his new allegiance. In September, George Washington informed him that he, Alexander Hamilton, Lafayette and several others would be in Peekskill, NY as part of a secret trip to New England.
Arnold attempted to send word to the British about this. However, the letter came too late.
Obviously, this would have been disastrous.
My questions:
1) If captured, what would the British do? Execute Washington immediately? Hold him and bring him to Clinton? Ship him and the others off to England for a reminder that they are the subjects of King George before they are hanged for treason?
2) How did News filter then? How long would it take before the world learn of this dramatic turn of events?
3) What about Arnold? He had assumed the post at West Point. No one would know of his treachery. I would imagine there is a chance -- despite his controversies -- he could have assumed a major role leading a lot of troops. I would imagine he would be willing to bargain their surrender for a price, and Clinton would gladly accept.
Anything else?
