WI: Battle of Mu'tah Byzantines vs Arabs

What if Battle of Mu'tah Byzantines vs Arabs

OTL Battle of Mu'tah occurred in 629 between Byzantine and Muslim Arab forces. The Byzantines won the battle but the victory was not decisive and due to the effort of Khaid bin Walid the Arab army was able to slip away.

What if the outcome of the battle had of been different? A) Decisive Byzantine victory in which the Arab army is destroyed and Khalid is killed. B) Muslim victory with the Emperor Heraclius' brother Theodore being killed and the Byzantine army destroyed.

Would would be the results of either A and B? Would Muhammad still be able to take Mecca? Would the Byzantines be better prepared for Yarmouk and take the Arab threat more seriously?

The first would be a severe defeat for Muhammad. Not only would he lose much prestige, the death of Khalid and loss of the Muslim army likely prevents him from achieving future military victories. Islam is probably stillborn.

The second would be an astounding victory for Muhammad. It would accelerate his conquests of Arabia and uniting the tribes. However, there is a big question mark on the Byzantine response and whether this would push Muhammad into an earlier war with Byzantium or Persia. Byzantines might do anything from ignore it to prepare better next time, or even provoke them into their own conquest of the Hedjaz in retaliation.

I would love to see a timeline based on A

A) would be a boring timeline imo. Basically another "no islam" tl. Or at least Islam as nothing more than a small regional cult no different from other indigenous monotheistic movements.

B) would be interesting. Such a victory would make Khalid a hero even earlier than OTL. Perhaps he overshadows Muhammad?

Surely B) would mean that the East Romans would take the Arabs seriously as a threat. An earlier arrangement with Persia to stamp them out?

Perhaps. The Persians were in bad shape after Battle of Nineveh the year before so I doubt they would have been in a position to oppose such a move.

I guess its possible. I'd be interested to know how loyal the bulk of Muhammad's followers to his person were at this early stage. I know Khalid and Muhammad had their share of disagreements maybe it could lead to Muhammad's marginalization??
