WI batsh-- crazy fundamentalist regime in England after 1660

Supposed not only was Monck's coup defeated, but Richard Cromwell was pushed aside by the most hard-core Puritans, the seventeenth century religious equivalent of the Gang of Four, and they consolidated power. How long would such a regime last and what would be the repercussions?

Effects on the New World would be interesting. What would the Catholic's fate be ? Maybe some Stuarts get more support from Catholic Countries ? Maybe even the Pope intervenes?

I suspect even a short-lived regime of this type would butterfly away the British Empire, which is why I posted it. The key is it surviving long enough that only a foreign invasion could overthrow it, but getting enough other European powers (eg France) pissed off enough to actually try that.

What kind of regime are you looking for?

Puritan New England was not exactly an Orwellian hellhole...

There is a big difference between Puritan New England, and an old England (let alone the other nations in the British isles) where fanatical Puritans have taken over the government, backed by military force, and use it to force puritanism on everyone.

At least in the first decades, people settled in New England because they wanted to settle in a place away from England and its politics, along with other like minded people. The only outsiders they had to deal with were Indians. Everyone else were Protestant religious fanatics. If you really thought differently, you could always move elsewhere in New England and found your own colony, like Rogers Williams did.

Very different in a place that still has large groups of Catholics and non-Puritan Christians, people who still like the traditional forms of government or things like civil liberties, and a King in exile that dissidents can rally around. Plus there is a difference between having France and the Netherlands as neighbors instead of New France and New Netherlands.

It wouldn't butterfly away BNA, thanks to the Puritan Great Migration from 1620 to 1640 there were more English settlers in North America than all the other European settlers combined and thanks to the early Puritans taking "Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it." very seriously the population was growing very rapidly from natural increase.
