WI: Babylonian massacre?

What if instead of being exiled to Babylon, instead the portion of the Jewish population that would have been exiled is instead massacred by the Babylonians for noncompliance? How would this affect the development of the Jewish religion?

Note that not all Judaeans were exiled it's just the post Babylonian elites descended from the exiles.
Samaritans can be considered as one set of non exiled Judaic groups, and Iraqi Jews as a set of exiles that stayed.
Without the Captivity Judaism likely remains fragmented longer before another elite arises with different emphasis on the early Torah etc and obviously less Babylonian influence on interpretation and rewrites.
