The book “Canada’s Flying Saucer, the story of AvRO Canada’s secret projects.” (Bill Zuk: Boston Mills Press, 2001. ISBN 1-55046-359-4). Explains that AvRO tested models of the spade-shaped prototype in 1952 and gained US Army funding for the flying saucer in 1953. When John Frost’s concept proved unstable and unable to climb out of ground effect, the US Army ended funding in 1960. The concept of a VTOL supersonic fighter died along with dozens of similar projects by other manufacturers.
Along the way, Frost and AvRO solved some of the problems of hovercraft flight.
OTL simultaneous development in Britain produced the first practical hovercraft which entered service in the 1960s.
