I am thinking of a failure of the church to unite in the Avignon schism and instead the Orthodox Church merges with the Roman church of the HRE is this possible with a POD of 1390?

Agreed. There are far too many ideological rifts between the Orthodox and Catholic churches by 1390 for any union to be more skin deep. They tried in 1439 at the Council of Florence but even with the Ottoman Turks breathing down their necks, the eastern churches refused to accept. The only way that the eastern churches would be willing to embrace union would be if a general western crusade actually drove the Turks from Europe and Anatolia and then handed the territories in question to the Byzantine Empire. However any scenario that showed that would certainly be ASB and even then the Byzantines would have a really hard time stomaching the doctrine of papal supremacy.
Why not just have the Roman Church have a reformation with having then later have communion with the Greek Church which now shares the same doctrines and the Avignon keeps the OTL doctrines of the Catholic Church.
