WI the fully automatic vehicle transmission was never invented?
Let's say that cars developed as they have to the present day, but only with manual transmissions. While OTL in Europe manual is very common, it is not quite as common in the United States. I don't know why this is the case. Maybe it's because automatic transmission was invented here, or because American cars were until recently quite large, heavy, and not as agile as European cars. Automatic did provide a strategic advantage in WWII, as the military outfitted tanks with GM auto trannies.
What would be some effects?
1) Would the Allied victory in WW II take longer/require more warfare to achieve the same goal as OTL?
2) Maybe US car ownership would not be as high today? Would less people learn to drive? Would this lead to less carbon emissions?
3) What effect would this have on American car size and fuel economy?
4) How would this change the US auto industry?
5) Would this have any effect on the establishment of the Interstate system?
6) What impact would this have on mass transit? Would more cities have kept their streetcar systems?
