WI: Austro-Turkish War 1664

The war ended with a huge victory for the Austrians at St. Gotthard. But instead of a war to liberate Hungary, Leopold I made a peace. Is there a possibility they actually free those lands from the Ottomans? Maybe Lepold could change his mind (highly unlikely) or if Ferdinand IV lives, maybe he makes some different decisions (he was definetly different from Leopold). There is also a possibility of something like a Holy League with Venice which was already fighting a war (Candian War) with the Ottomans, the Pope and Poland, though Poland was somewhat tired from the Deluge, they could still help, atleast in Upper Hungary. I know the French and German troops weren't keen on the war, but maybe some troops, like the Bavarians could stay and help, especially with a different war, and some more troops would be raised in Bohemia and Austria. And also the sieges of Novi Zrin and Nagykanizsa; if the Ottomans were defeated there, war could also take a different course.

'Holy Leagues' were pretty much dead by the 1600s. And I don't see the Austrians having any interest in allying with the Venetians. The Habsburgs might have wanted to gobble the city-state up as a part of their empire, helping them secure dominion in the Mediterranean would be contrary to that intent. The polish didn't have much strength to help Austria at this point (and why would they? The Austrians were a threat to free Poland) and the French were at least nominally Ottoman allies (the Franco-Ottoman alliance) with no interest in stabbing their allies in the bask to help their Habsburg rivals.

The Austrians were pretty clever to not try and hold on to more than they could manage in my opinion.

Neither the French or German allies of Leopold I had any interest in liberating Hungary. Without their help, Leopold was not strong enough to successfully invade Hungary. The nearly 20 year truce gave the Austrians enough time to build up their resources and form alliances against the Ottomans. If Leopold had continued the war, he risked France taken advantage of the war to seize territories in the Holy Roman Empire.

Well, since you killed the suggestion, is a victory at Novi Zrin possible. But a complete one with Montecuccoli's help and a complete annihalation of the Ottoman army? Hungary would be defenseless at least for a short period. Or maybe an earlier liberating in the war 1593-1606? Austrians seemed to be doing fine then. Maybe winning at Keresztes and continuing further? Something like different commander/s or Murad III dying or overthrown or juyt simply nevet bothering to leave the harem? :D
