WI: Austria split into democratic and communist states?

Ok, I stop advocating the point. Let's then assume W Germany and W Austria soon unify, E Austria and E Germany remain separate WarPac states, and there are two Western exclaves in W Berlin and W Vienna.

That's something I was thinking about, the Soviets were pretty pissed of about Berlin IOTL, and it was only because of a huge airdrop operation that West Berlin remained part of the West, so assuming West Berlin remains under Allied control, I could see the Soviets doing everything short of outright War to ensure their is'nt an Austrian version in Vienna.

Pissed off as the Soviets may be, they can do jack squat to prevent the West Berlin situation from duplicating in West Vienna. They have already tried every trick just short of outright war for Berlin, and it didn't work. They can certainly minimize the consequences and build a twin Wall in Berlin and Vienna much earlier than OTL. This might easily and very likely happen ITTL when they find themselves burdened with a double Western exclave in their bloc. But to remove the exclaves themselves, no.

Czechoslovakia would have Communist neighbours on all sides except for a narrow border with West Germany and Hungary would have been entirely surrounded by Communist neighbours; it is hard to dream of rebellion from your Moscow overlords when you are entirely submerged within their territories with no window to the west.

I was having second thoughts on this, and I realized that the PoD would actually change little about the rebelliousness of Czechoslovakia and Hungary to Soviet yoke. Poland never had a land border with NATO or even neutral democratic countries, yet it did not stop the Poles from rebelling to the Communists in 1956, 1970, 1976, and 1980-81.

Honestly I'm not convinced, I mean it's certainly possible, but I think the Soviets would be even more motivated to prevent it.

Perhaps some sort of deal is made behind the scenes to prevent it?

It's not an issue of motivation, it's the lack of available means. The Berlin blockade went just this short of outright war, and it didn't work. If the Soviets go any more forceful, America shall accept escalation into WW3 and swiftly proceed to gift the USSR with plenty of canned sunshine.

Perhaps some sort of deal is made behind the scenes to prevent it?

What could the Soviets ever concede that they are willing to part with, and the West would be interested in, more than Central Europe ? West Berlin turned into a political triumph for the Western bloc, the status quo favors them, and scarcely anything at stake in the early Cold War may be more important to the USA than keeping their ground in Central Europe.
