I know the Italians wanted it, but let's assume the victorious nations decide in 1919 that without a port Austria isn't viable as a state, and chose to give them Trieste. This is seen as the lesser evil: it is not the best, but it's better than her inevitable union with Germany. The Italians are compensated with part of Albania or with part of German colonnies.... but not enough to avoid Mussolini's takeover.

Then, what happens? Probably, they will develope a navy. How does this change the balance of power in the Mediterrean? Would the country ally with Germany, Italy, or with none of them? Would there still be an Anchluss? A WWII? How would it develope?

There are infinite possibilites, I know. But let's explore some...
